How do you choose the right content creator for your hotel?

By the Séjournée editorial team · Sources checked on · Updated on · Published on

The right hotel UGC creator can produce what you need, within your operating constraints, with rights you can use. That is not necessarily the person with the largest following or most spectacular portfolio.

Separate three questions: creative ability, ability to work with your team and, only if you are buying distribution, audience relevance.

A selection process based on observable evidence is more useful than choosing a profile because it feels prestigious.

Define the outcome before browsing profiles

“Create awareness for the hotel” is too broad to guide a selection.

Write something more specific:

We need two videos helping couples understand the difference between our standard room and terrace room, for our own social channels and website.

You now know what to assess: filming interiors, explaining a meaningful difference and representing the property accurately. A large audience does not compensate for a portfolio that never demonstrates those abilities.

The UGC versus advertising-video guide can help clarify the assignment.

Watch three complete videos

Do not rely only on a showreel. A collection of impressive shots may not demonstrate the ability to produce a coherent standalone video.

Check each example for:

  • opening: is the subject quickly understandable?
  • progression: do the shots build a useful story?
  • accuracy: can viewers understand the spaces?
  • sound and text: will the content work in its intended setting?
  • ending: what information should the viewer retain?

Look at work made in a less spectacular location too. It can reveal framing, lighting and storytelling skill more clearly than an exceptional pool view.

Use a short evidence-based scorecard

Score each criterion from 0 to 2: absent, partly demonstrated or clearly demonstrated. This supports a discussion; it is not a scientific quality ranking.

Criterion Evidence Useful question
Fit with the property Comparable work How would you show our distinctive feature?
Technical clarity Complete final video Is the text readable on a phone?
Brief understanding Restatement of the assignment What remains ambiguous?
Organisation Proposed workflow What access will you need?
Commercial scope Detailed quotation Which versions and rights are included?
Audience, if purchased Relevant recent data How does it match our target guests?

Attach a comment and evidence link to every score. A high total should never cancel out a blocking issue, such as rights that do not cover the planned campaign.

Ask five questions before confirming

  1. Which scenes are essential to answer the brief?
  2. What could prevent those scenes being filmed?
  3. Who handles editing and feedback?
  4. Exactly what will we receive?
  5. Which changes would require a new quotation?

Specific answers reveal preparation. Someone who notices that the restaurant is closed on the proposed day helps you manage the assignment. A promise of “guaranteed viral content” does not explain a production process.

Also check that the dates give your staff time to prepare the spaces and access arrangements.

Separate portfolio, identity and results

A portfolio demonstrates selected work. Administrative verification addresses another subject. A customer reference needs context.

Ask what a badge means instead of assuming its scope. A platform does not replace your assessment of style or your review of final deliverables.

If a specific test is necessary, pay for a new production and define its use. Discussing the brief or a proposed approach will often help distinguish applicants without commissioning unpaid filming.

Prepare the contract alongside the visual references

Confirm intended usage, participants, access and included revisions before signing.

In France, Article L131-3 of the Intellectual Property Code requires assigned rights to be defined. For identifiable people in commercial content, Service Public’s image-rights guidance explains the importance of appropriate permission.

Address these matters before the stay, not when the marketing team is ready to launch an advertisement.

Choose the person who reduces uncertainty

Your decision should fit into three lines: what the creator has demonstrated, what remains unresolved and why their approach suits the assignment.

Keep that note with the quotation. Then use the UGC collaboration checklist to turn a good selection into a well-prepared assignment.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers should a creator have?

For production intended for the hotel’s channels, content quality matters more than a follower threshold. Audience becomes a separate criterion when creator posting is part of the assignment.

Should you choose a hospitality specialist?

Relevant experience can help with operations, but examine the actual work. Look for examples of spaces, lighting constraints and services comparable to those at your property.

Can you ask for a free test video?

Prefer existing work and a discussion of the brief. If you request a new usable production, agree a paid test with a clear scope and rights.

Is a verified profile enough to make a decision?

No. Establish exactly what the verification covers, then assess the portfolio, understanding of the brief, availability and contract separately.
